Sub-Saharan Africa holds 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land, yet its smallholder farmers produce only 20 to 40% of attainable crop yields. Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered agricultural robotics offers a pathway to close this gap, but its economic viability in low-resource contexts remains poorly quantified. This study constructs a cost-benefit framework evaluating five technology tiers: smartphone AI disease detection ($150 per farm), drone scouting ($1,200), AI irrigation ($800), autonomous weeding robots ($3,500), and integrated platforms ($2,500 per cooperative member). Data are drawn from field trials and economic surveys across East, West, and Southern Africa. Results show cooperative ownership achieves break-even in 1.5 seasons compared to 4.2 for individual purchase, with internal rates of return ranging from 35% to 85%. Smartphone disease detection delivers the highest ROI (120% over three years) at the lowest entry cost, while weeding robots deliver the highest yield gains (+59%) but require the largest investment. Sensitivity analysis identifies crop yield response and cooperative adoption rate as the most influential parameters. The inclusivity assessment reveals a critical gap: Farms under 0.5 hectares show only 12% adoption and capture 18% income gains, compared to 62% adoption and 52% gains for farms over 5 hectares. Women access AI technologies at 30 to 42% of male rates. Regional analysis shows East and Southern Africa possess near-term deployment prerequisites, while Central Africa requires foundational investments. The study proposes a tiered deployment strategy, sequencing technology from low-cost mobile AI to advanced robotics, with each tier generating the returns and literacy needed to support the next.
